Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet Insurance

Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet Insurance

February 11, 2022

Weight of ice, snow and sleet insurance is a type of coverage that provides protection against damage to property resulting from “heavy” winter weather. This coverage may already be included on your policy OR it could require a separate purchase. More specifically, weight of ice, snow, or sleet insurance covers damage from winter storms, such as collapse from heavy snow or water damage that results from ice damming.

As we are coming into warmer temperatures, we see the heavier snows and ice melting on roofs during the day and freezing back on at night (creating ice dams). Two feet of new snow could weigh as much as 60 lbs. per square foot of roof space which is way beyond the typical snow load capacity of most roofs. In Wisconsin, we tend to see more snowstorms in March and April than any other month.

You will want to check if this coverage is included for your dwellings as well as your outbuildings and do this as soon as you can. On most policies, there is a 30 day wait period when you add this coverage to an existing policy. Let Premier Insurance Services review your coverages.
